Avatar Assignment

This was a school assignment where we had to create a game avatar. Which meant that we had to create 3 forms of movement, a walk, an idle pose and either a crouch animation or a jump. Personally I went for a crouch animation, because it went better with the background I had made. However it took a while before these animations got to the point they are now.

Work Process

First we began working on paper, figuring out what we wanted to do exactly. I already decided to work with a mushroom quite early on, however I wasn't sure in what direction I wanted to go. Over time, the final mushroom design came through.

Animation

Once I was satisfied with the design, the animation started. This process also took quite a while, for I had never designed a mushroom before and animated it.

Some questions were suddenly very important, how would a mushroom walk? How would it breath?

After a lot of feedback, I managed to figure out the walk cycle. Only some secondary action in the mushroom 'hat' was needed. But overall I could move on to the idle animation.

The idle animation needed a bit more feedback, but I figured it out more quickly than the walk cycle.

The crouch animation had a whole different idea at first, but it was too difficult at that time to pull off. So I moved on to this idea, which worked just as nicely.

Backgrounds

The backgrounds had to work well with the character. Since she is quite small, it would be important she was like a little light in a dark room. Visible in the game environment.

I made several coloured variants and decided on the 3rd one. It worked colourwise the best with my character design.

Unity

The assignment had an optional part where you could make your character function in Unity. I tried to create something, but due to lack of time couldn't finish it. I had fun doing it though, for it had been a while since I worked last in Unity.
